[申 6:16] “你们不可试探耶和华你们的 神，像你们在玛撒那样试探他。
玛撒（Massah），是一个在圣经中出现多次的地名。搜索和合本圣经，一共出现五次，分别在：出 17:7；申 6:16；申 9:22；申 33:8 ;诗 95:8。他们所指的是同一个地方，在汛的旷野(出 17:1)；摩西另外一次击打磐石事件试探了耶和华，是在寻的旷野民20：1，两者不可混淆。
玛撒有一个另外的名字，叫米利巴，他们两者指同一个地方。根据出 17:7的记录，该地名具有事件的纪念意义，因为在那个地方，以色列民因为没有水喝，和摩西争闹，试探了耶和华神。玛撒本身的一个意思就是：试探，而米利巴的意思是：争闹。并且，米利巴可能为该地点的一个民间称呼，因为在第二次的击打磐石时，那个水被命名为：加低斯米利巴水，也是根据事件的性质来命名的，为使以色列人的后裔记得曾经对上帝的试探和悖逆。
关于玛撒具体的位置，在出埃及记17章中，我们知道该地点的大区域的名字叫利非订。玛撒是利非订里面的一个地点。所以笔者也在网络中找到了一些地图作为参考：
